See exactly what changed between two texts
Paste two versions of a text, or open two files, and every difference shows at once: removed lines in red, added lines in green, and inside each changed line, the exact words or characters that changed. Read them side by side or inline, fold the unchanged parts, jump from one change to the next, and export the changes as a standard diff. All the features are free, with no account and no limit, and your texts never leave your browser.
How to compare two texts
- Paste the original text on the left and the new version on the right, or open two files.
- The differences appear right away: choose words or characters, and ignore spaces or case if needed.
- Use the arrows to go through the changes, then copy or download the diff if you need it.
What to use it for
- Contracts and documents: check what the other side changed in a new version.
- Writing and translation: compare two drafts, or a text before and after proofreading.
- Code and configuration: find the line that differs between two files, ignoring indentation.
- Data: compare two lists, two CSV exports or two JSON responses line by line.
- Students and teachers: see what was changed between two versions of an essay.
Frequently asked questions
Are my texts sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs in your browser: the texts and files you compare are never uploaded, saved or shared, and they are not in the page address. Close the tab and they are gone. You can compare contracts, code or personal documents safely.
Can I compare two files?
Yes. Click Open file above each box, or drop a file on it: text files, Markdown, CSV, JSON, XML, HTML, code and logs, up to 5 MB each. For Word or PDF documents, copy their text and paste it in the boxes.
What is the difference between side by side and inline?
Side by side shows the original on the left and the changed text on the right, line against line: the easiest way to read a revised document. Inline shows one column, each removed line followed by the line that replaces it, like a code review. On phones, the inline view is used to keep lines readable.
What do Ignore spaces and Ignore case do?
Ignore spaces treats lines that differ only by spaces, tabs or indentation as identical, which is useful for code that was reformatted. Ignore case treats uppercase and lowercase letters as the same. The lines are still shown as they are written.
What is a .diff file?
It is the standard way to describe changes between two texts, used by git and code review tools: removed lines start with a minus sign, added lines with a plus sign, with three unchanged lines around each change. You can copy it or download it to share the changes, or apply them with git apply or patch.
Can I compare very long texts?
Yes, texts of thousands of lines are compared in an instant. Unchanged parts are folded so you only see what changed: click on a folded part to open it, and use the arrows to jump from one change to the next. Two very long texts that have almost nothing in common may be too slow to compare, and the tool will tell you.
