Pick colors from an image

This tool finds the exact color of any point of a picture. Hover the image, a zoom shows the pixels under your pointer, and one click gives you the HEX, RGB and HSL codes, ready to copy. It also extracts the color palette of the image: the main colors, with the share of the picture they cover, to reuse in a design, a website or a presentation.

How to pick a color from an image

  1. Drop your image in the box, click to choose it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. Hover the image and click the color you want. Every picked color is kept in a list.
  3. Copy its HEX, RGB or HSL code, or copy the whole palette of the image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the HEX code of a color in an image?

Upload the image, move your mouse over it and click the point you want. The HEX, RGB and HSL codes appear on the side, each with a copy button. On a phone, touch the image and slide your finger: the zoom shows the pixel under it, and the color is picked when you lift your finger.

Why do neighboring pixels have slightly different colors?

Photos and JPG images are made of many close shades, and compression adds small variations. Use the zoom to aim at the right pixel, or use the palette: it groups those shades into the main colors of the image.

How is the color palette created?

The tool groups similar pixels together and keeps the most present colors that are clearly different from each other. The percentage shows how much of the image each color covers. Transparent areas are ignored. Choose 4 to 10 colors, then copy the HEX list or ready to use CSS variables.

What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?

They describe the same color in three ways. HEX (#0970AD) is the short code used in web design and most design tools. RGB (9, 112, 173) gives the amount of red, green and blue from 0 to 255. HSL gives the hue in degrees, the saturation and the lightness, which makes it easy to create lighter or darker variants.

Can I pick a color outside the image?

In Chrome and Edge on a computer, the Pick from screen button lets you pick a color anywhere on your screen: another window, a website, a video. Other browsers do not offer this feature yet.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read directly in your browser and never leaves your device.
