Frequently asked questions

How do I split a picture into 9 posts for Instagram?

Upload your picture, keep the 3 × 3 grid and click Download: you get 9 images numbered in posting order. Post them one by one, starting with number 1. Once the ninth is published, they form one big picture on your profile.

In which order should I post the images?

Instagram shows the newest post first, in the top left corner of your profile. So the grid is posted backwards: number 1 is the bottom right image, the last number is the top left one. The files are named in this order, and the tool shows a small map of it.

Why is there no 2 × 2 grid?

An Instagram profile always shows 3 posts per row. With 2 columns, each new post would shift the others and break the picture. That is why every grid here has 3 columns and 1 to 5 rows.

What is the difference between Tile, Portrait 4:5 and Square posts?

Tile gives each post exactly the size of its cell, 1080 × 1440 pixels for the portrait grid. Portrait 4:5 and Square posts are a bit wider than their cell: the profile grid only shows their center, so the big picture stays aligned, and opening a post shows a little of its neighbors, which looks more natural. With those, keep the grid preview centered when Instagram asks.

Does the profile grid show square or portrait thumbnails?

Since early 2025, Instagram profiles show portrait thumbnails with a 3:4 shape, instead of the old squares. The Portrait 3:4 post shape matches this grid. If your profile still shows squares, choose the Square post shape.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The grid is built and cut directly in your browser: your pictures never leave your device.
